11. Use the Native American tradition of the “talking stick” to discuss one of the above questions. First, get in a “talking circle,” where there is no top or bottom, first or last, better or worse. Then pass around a “talking stick” with the understanding that whoever holds the stick can speak for as long as he or she wishes, while everyone else listens with respect and attention. Native American leader Manitonquat, who conducts monthly “talking circles” in prison sweat lodges all over the country, says that the cardinal rule of the talking stick is that “no one will interrupt, and no one will argue with a previous speaker, or with any other individual. You respect him by listening and keeping your mind open to hear his words, as well as to feel his heart and what lies behind the words. Each person holding the talking stick is asked only to be honest.”132
